How many cats are too many cats?

00:51

Let's admit it. Cats are easy. We have the lowest maintenance, We are everywhere in the city. We don't need your 24/7 attention. We are adaptable. We bathe ourselves. And once in a while, even though you have fed us enough, we will still be looking for snacks in the streets (there's always a rat needs to be munched), and occasionally that wonderfully leftover pizzas and pecel lele in neighbors' trash bins.

It's easy to just grab one of us from the streets. And then 2 more. And then, 3 more. And then, 5 more. The next thing you know, neighbors will call you crazy cat lady (or guy) and you realise that you have 20 cats running around in your house, ruining the furniture and please don't get me started on what happened when there's a virus outbreak there. Vomit, poos and pees -- and you went gaga. One way gaga.

Let's do the math:

Let's say you feed one canned food to one cat, daily. Means it's about 16,000 daily. Times 30 days, means 480,000 monthly.
Vitamin & supplement cost for one cat could be around 50,000 - 200,000 monthly.
And for yearly vaccines, could take up to 600,000
And neutering them, could be around 200,000 - 600,000 (depends your vet price policy).

So for one cat, you need to have 800,000 to 1,200,000 in advance for neuter & vaccines.
And then their monthly cost would be around 680,000
(Btw for cheaper ways in feeding cats, see our recipes here)

This is not including cages, cat toys, scratch post or whatever it is that you need to pimp up your cat's lifestyle :p

That's one.

So how many cats should you have? We'll if you're making 1,500,000 - 2,500,000 per month, 1 cat should keep you sane. Max 2, if you can work your way around the food.

If you're making 2,500,000 - 3,500,000 monthly, max 3 cats should keep you sane.

If you're making 3,500,000 - 6,000,000 monthly, max 5 cats should keep you sane.

If you're making 6,000,000 - 8,000,000 monthly, max 7 cats should keep you sane.

And if you're making more than 8,000,000 ... I guess you can have max 8-10 cats in the house.

If you have more than 10 cats, I would suggest to hire a cat keeper or point out someone in the household other than you (the money maker), to be fully responsible for the cats. Since it could be a little overwhelming.

Then again, another point is: how large is your house?

Cats are territorial beings. They require space. If you see how sometimes the male cats spraying his urine to the walls, curtains, or to your leg -- it's because they are marking their territory. Once another cat gets in to that territory, oohhhh "We will diiine in heeellll!!!" it's going to be colossal fight, I tell you.

If you live in a studio apartment, 1 cat is enough. If you live in a one or 2 bedroom apartment, 2 cats are proper.
If you live in a small house, about 80 - 100 meters sq, max 2 cats are proper.
If you live in a 100 - 200 meters sq house, I guess max 4 cats are proper.
If you live in a 200 - 300 meters sq house, max 6 cats are proper.
And so on and so on, you'll get the idea. As long as you don't jammed us up inside a small space - we could ended up killing each other. Haha. Jk. At least we will have a cat fight or two every once in a while.
